Philosophy 260 Final Essay Exam - 598 Words

Religion and god(s) have been a huge part of all philosophy for as long as humanity has had a functioning society. Many philosophers have had attempted to obtain a better understanding of the religion they practice through reflection , observation or some other method. This essay will compare and contrast the philosophical views of Anicius Manlius Severinus Boethius, an ancient Roman philosopher, and Meister Eckhart, a medieval European philosopher. Their views are likely to have many contrasts as they both come for different time periods, backgrounds, and educations. It will likely be, in all probability, more interesting to see were there views of the simplicity and eternity of the divine match than where they differ so we will first examine Boethius views. Anicius Boethius lived somewhere between the 4th and 5th centuries as a roman aristocrat. To be clear Boethius was Christian not a follower of the ancient Greek gods now to his views of divinity. Boethius views are best illustra ted in a scenario that he created in Consolation of Philosophy which is; god knows everything about the past and the future as a omniscient being. This would mean that god knows not only everything that you have done but will do as well. This begs the question that if god knows everything that you are going to do or think and all of it is predetermined then even our own thoughts are not free because that is what god led you to think as god already determined what you are going to do. On Monsieurs Departure - 1190 Words

On Monsieur s Departure, with its highly interpretive nature and use of strong themes and appropriate literary devices, expresses the inner turmoil of its author, Queen Elizabeth, to the reader. The basic concept of this 17th century poem is one of the divided passions of Queen Elizabeth. Elizabeth loved her country with fierce loyalty and control, but also had her own personal needs, and though it is not entirely certain as to whom this poem was referencing to, it is speculated to be about either the 2nd Earl of Essex or the Duc d Anjou (French duke of Anjou). Essex (Robert Derereaux) was 30 years Elizabeth s junior and was a charming, opinionated man with whom Elizabeth was completely enamored, but the relationship terminated when†¦show more content†¦The line, Follows me flying, flies when I pursue it, with use of alliteration is concise and artful, with a condense accumulation of emotion. The theme of Elizabeth s care (of this man) being unattainable for her to grasp is very eminent in this stanza, with two supporting examples. The first comes in lines 7 and 8, where Elizabeth conveys, My care is like my shadow in the sun,/Follows me flying, flies when I pursue it. She is articulating that her own personal feelings are unconstrained to her, without the control she is wishing to enforce. The second instance in line 11, No means I find to rid him from my breast, expresses not that there is a physical person which she feels the need to remove, but instead that Elizabeth believes that there is no way to eradicate the thoughts and feelings she has for this man from her heart. This continuing theme of separation from oneself and separation from emotional control is echoed throughout the poem, creating a delicate symmetry between each stanza, and allowing them to unite. The third stanza of On Monsieur s Departure embraces again figurative language, repetition, and a final accumulation of sentiment through deliberative wording. In this stanza, Elizabeth uses a very important metaphor (expression relating one thing to another) to represent herself. She writes, in line 14, that she is made of melting snow, a phrase which captures thoughts and images that may otherwise not have been soShow MoreRelatedMonsieurs Departure853 Words   |  4 PagesOn Monsieur’s Departure This poem is one of the nicest poems, which was written by Queen Elizabeth I. The APA section surprised me, because I did not think I had retain as much information about APA formatting. I had use MLA formatting style for three previous degrees and to begin using APA formatting style was quite challenging for me. Medea Monologues Essay Example For Students

Medea Monologues Essay A monologue from the play by Euripides NOTE: This monologue is reprinted from The Plays of Euripides in English, vol. ii. Trans. Shelley Dean Milman. London: J.M. Dent Sons, 1922. MEDEA: From my apartment, ye Corinthian dames, Lest ye my conduct censure, I come forth: For I have known full many who obtained Fame and high rank; some to the public gaze Stood ever forth, while others, in a sphere More distant, chose their merits to display: Nor yet a few, who, studious of repose, Have with malignant obloquy been called Devoid of spirit: for no human eyes Can form a just discernment; at one glance, Before the inmost secrets of the heart Are clearly known, a bitter hate \gainst him Who never wronged us they too oft inspire. But \tis a stranger\s duty to adopt The manners of the land in which he dwells; Nor can I praise that native, led astray By mere perverseness and o\erweening folly, Who bitter enmity incurs from those Of his own city. But, alas! my friends, This unforseen calamity hath withered The vigour of my soul. I am undone, Bereft of every joy that life can yield, And therefore wish to die. For as to him, My husband, whom it did import me most To have a thorough knowledge of, he proves The worst of men. But sure among all those Who have with breath and reason been endued, We women are the most unhappy race. First, with abundant gold are we constrained To buy a husband, and in him receive A haughty master. Still doth there remain One mischief than this mischief yet more grievous, The hazard whether we procure a mate Worthless or virtuous: for divorces bring Reproach to woman, nor must she renounce The man she wedded; as for her who comes Where usages and edicts, which at home She learnt not, are established, she the gift Of divination needs to teach her how A husband must be chosen: if aright These duties we perform, and he the yoke Of wedlock with complacency sustains, Ours is a happy life; but if we fail In this great object, better \twere to die. For, when afflicted by domestic ills, A man goes forth, his choler to appease, And to some friend or comrade can reveal What he endures; but we to him alone For succour must look up. They still contend That we, at home remaining, lead a life Exempt from danger, while they launch the spear: False are these judgments; rather would I thrice, Armed with a target, in th\ embattled field Maintain my stand, than suffer once the throes Of childbirth. But this language suits not you: This is your native city, the abode Of your loved parents, every comfort life Can furnish is at hand, and with your friends You here converse: but I, forlorn, and left Without a home, am by that husband scorned Who carried me from a Barbarian realm. Nor mother, brother, or relation now Have I, to whom I \midst these storms of woe, Like an auspicious haven, can repair. Thus far I therefore crave ye will espouse My interests, as if haply any means Or any stratagem can be devised For me with justice to avenge these wrongs On my perfidious husband, on the king Who to that husband\s arms his daughter gave, And the new-wedded princess; to observe Strict silence. For although at other times A woman, filled with terror, is unfit For battle, or to face the lifted sword, She when her soul by marriage wrongs is fired, Thirsts with a rage unparalleled for blood.
